Germany: Abeking & Rasmussen Names Their First SWATH Survey Vessel

On 18th April 2012, the delivery and naming ceremony of the new SWATH hydrographic survey vessel “Jakob Prei” took place at the shipyard Abeking & Rasmussen Schiffs- und Yachtwerft Aktiengesellschaft inGermany. The godmother of the vessel was Woman of the Year2011 in Estonia, Mrs Tea Varrak, who is Director for Innovation and Business Centre at Tallinn University of Technology.

The Estonian Maritime Administration ordered a modern SWATH-type survey vessel within the framework of the project “Enhancing Maritime Safety on Estonian Waterways (Procuring a Survey Vessel for Hydrographic Surveys of Waterways)”. The vessel is going to be named “Jakob Prei” in honour of Colonel Prei, one of the founders of the hydrography service in Estoniain the 1920s.

The 25m SWATH@A&R offers accommodation and common rooms for eight persons and will feature a containerized installation for research equipment. Therefore, a flexible adaptation to further development of instrumentation can be done with low effort in short time by changing the container.

Including this order Abeking & Rasmussen has meanwhile delivered or contracted 22 SWATH vessels for customers worldwide, which prove their leadership in this sophisticated technology. The total for 17 untis ordered makes the 25m vessels the most successful SWATH vessels in the world.
