Swedish developer plans the biggest offshore wind farm

Business & Finance

The world’s largest offshore wind power farm is under construction off England in the North Sea, but it won’t hold the title for long, as a Swedish developer plans a much larger wind farm further offshore in deeper waters, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Because there is little room in its crowded countryside for sprawling wind-tower complexes, European Green energy planners are increasingly looking to the sea, reported the Journal.

The European Wind Energy Association predicts that Europe’s current 2,000 megawatts of offshore generating capacity will grow at least 40,000 megawatts by 2020, enough to power more than 25 million households, the Journal reported.

The stringent European Union wind energy targets are attracting some of the Green energy sector’s biggest players, including General Electric (GE) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, according to the Journal.
