Two Turbine Installation Vessels Install Eight Wind Turbines at Walney 2 (UK)

Walney 2 was planned to be installed in almost half the time it took to install Walney 1. In order to do that, two turbine installation vessels are working side by side with the installation.

On Thursday 2 June 2011, both Kraken and Leviathan installed their first turbine in Walney 2, and both vessels have completed two installation trips, resulting in 8 installed turbines.

The weather in May and to some degree in June has caused long periods with weather downtime, but still Svanen has installed 37 monopiles and Goliath 21 transition pieces in Walney 2, and the expectation is that all foundations will be in place by August 2011.

The Walney Offshore Windfarm

The Walney Offshore Windfarm project is located approximately 15km west of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria. The project consists of Walney 1 and Walney 2 each with 51 – 3.6MW turbines, giving a total capacity of the Walney project of 367.2MW. The rotor diameter of the turbines is 107m for Walney 1 and 120m for Walney 2, with a maximum height of 150m from blade tip to sea level. The total area of the development is some 73km2.
