XYS Technologies' Buoy to Measure Wind Potential in Baltic Sea (Latvia)

XYS Technologies Inc. (AXYS) announced that the Baltic Wind Park (BWP) have confirmed their reputation as the leading offshore wind energy provider in the Baltic States by selecting the WindSentinel™ wind resource assessment buoy to be deployed off Latvia as part of their wind resource assessment program.

The AXYS WindSentinel™ will be used not only for real-time climate data collection but also as part of the BWP’s Environmental Impact Assessment procedure in the development of the biggest offshore wind energy project that has been planned in the Baltic States.

The WindSentinel™ will be constructed at the AXYS facility in Sidney, BC Canada, with deployment scheduled for late-2012. At its core, the WindSentinel™ uses Catch the Wind’s Vindicator® Laser Wind Sensor (LWS) to capture wind data that will then be transmitted to a shore station where it will be analyzed and reviewed by BWP researchers. It is planned that various other equipment will be installed on WindSentinel™ as well, in order to collect data on marine resources, bird migration and other matters.

“The WindSentinel will give us in-the-water, real-time data using the most advanced wind testing equipment,” says Andrejs Silins, Chairman of the Board of BWP. “The flexibility and mobility of the buoy as well as the significant cost and time savings compared to constructing a met tower will give us an in depth understanding of the potential for future offshore wind developments.”

AXYS Technologies, Inc. designs, manufactures, distributes and maintains remote environmental data acquisition, processing and telemetry systems.
