Marine Computers to Withstand Battering of Ocean Waves (UK)

As the marine industry is constantly evolving, and requiring more computer technology, there is a demand for specialist computers capable of withstanding the environmental hostilities. One such example is Captec’s highly integrated compact computer for on board applications such as hydro graphic survey.

This highly compact, yet powerful computer system is tested to IEC-60945 EMC and environmental standards. Protected for all marine hostilities, its design is optimised for thermal management, shock and vibration, power interference and EMC emission and susceptibility. Also, Captec’s obsolescence management process ensures the systems can be manufactured for longevity, providing an average life cycle of 5-7 years from the point of introduction.

Both the fold away display and keyboard have lockable telescopic slide rails for ease of stowing when not in use. Rotating on torque hinges, the monitor has variable viewing angles allowing optimal viewing for the operator.

Specifically engineered with safe handling regulations in mind, the system comprises lightweight materials including aluminium chassis and plywood casing. The entire system including the component mountings, have been designed to reduce potential damage caused by shock and vibration, both in transport and in operation.

The systems are able to be used within the flight case, or for a fixed installation, they can be integrated directly into a 19”rack. For OEM applications the colour and customised graphics can be tailored to cater for individual customer branding.

Multiple PCI plug-in card expansion allows customer specific functionality to be added, for use in a wide diversity of instrumentation and measurement applications. Designed for operation in temperatures of -15 to +55, the systems are engineered with the appropriate level of processing power to balance the demands of the applications with the optimisation of thermal management.
