Malta Is Looking for Energy Solutions Offshore

Malta, the densely populated island in the Mediterranean  sea, is considering generating energy from resources off its coast, reports the Sunday Times.

At the annual Sustainable Energy Conference, held last month in Qawra, Malta, there was much interest in Maltese wave and offshore wind potential.

Nevertheless, concrete steps have not yet been realized.

Last year, a Swedish company which was planning to develop offshore wind project in Malta did not receive the EU funds because of the unproven technology, lack of wind tests and prototypes.

The main problem for offshore wind development in Malta is deep water.

Even though the southeastern area off Malta doesn’t have the best wind speed, it has been identified as the best site for wind power development.

Regarding the wave energy, the sea off northwest Gozo was identified as the best area for wave energy development since there have been recorded maximum wave height exceeding seven metres.
