Natural Power Concepts to Conduct Pilot Study in Kerala, India

A US-based company is set to test their tidal and river flow turbines in Kerala, India, reports The Times of India.

Namely, Natural Power Concepts (NPC) plans to deploy pilot programs in Africa and India, as they have already deployed this technology in Canada.

“The tidal and river flow auger turbine technology is currently used for generating power from Hudson Bay in Canada. Last week, the KSEB decided to give permission to NPC for the pilot study to evaluate the feasibility of the technology in Kerala,” said power secretary and KSEB chairman M. Sivashankar.

The company needs around USD 176,000 for the pilot study. If the Department of Science and Technology doesn’t approve funds for the study, NPC will need to meet expenses on their own.

“If the technology and machinery prove suitable to the state, the board is willing to purchase power from the company at the rates fixed by the state electricity regulatory commission”, Sivasankar stated.
