RWE Subcontracts Semco for Nordsee Ost Substation Project (Germany)

German energy group RWE has chosen Semco Maritime as subcontractor for design and installation of German utility provider RWE’s substation platform at the offshore wind farm Nordsee Ost in the German North Sea region.

The project includes offshore commissioning of the electrical and technical systems at the substation. The contract was won in close cooperation with the Danish partner Bladt Industries.

“Semco Maritime has in recent years witnessed significant growth within wind power, founded on our extensive experience as an offshore key operator in the North Sea region gained over the past decade. From literally being a “drop in the ocean” 10 years ago, the wind power business today plays an important role in Semco Maritime’s First Choice 2015 strategy,” says Vice President Carsten Nielsen.

The new RWE project adds to the series of more than 10 offshore substation projects that we have been involved in since 2003. This summer we have completed onshore constructions of the offshore substations for the Belgian Northwind project and DONG’s project Borkum Riffgrund 1 in the German part of the North Sea.

RWE’s Nordsee Ost (NSO) offshore wind farm is situated around 35 kilometres to the northeast of the island of Helgoland. With 48 multi-megawatt wind turbines, constructed in water depths of up to 25 metres, the wind farm will have a total output of around 295 megawatts.

The 2,000 tons heavy substation platform will be designed and constructed in a very tight time schedule. Fully equipped, tested and commissioned it is scheduled to leave Bladt Industries’ construction site in Aalborg in July 2014.
