Wind Farm Update

Densit Grouts West of Duddon Sands Substation, UK

Densit, a company specialized in offshore grouting, has completed substation grouting at one of the biggest European offshore wind farms – West of Duddon Sands in the UK.

During the planning stage of the installation, it was estimated that a 100 tons of Ducorit® S5 UHPC material will be necessary to conduct the grouting. This calculation has shown to be accurate, and has helped to save both time and resources.

Ducorit® was developed especially for offshore operations, where durability and low chloride penetration of grouting material are crucial. With the compressive strength of up to 200 MPa, Ducorit® does not mix with sea water under grouting and has got fast strength development. These product features combined with careful planning in the earlier stages of the project helped Densit to finish the work on time, and the actual grouting took no longer than 24 hours.

The grouting work was performed for Volker Staal en Funderingen, who has years of experience with steel fabrication and foundation sectors in Europe. The transportation was carried by Scaldis SMC.

Since the grouting of the first major offshore wind farm, Densit has remained the global leader in offshore grouting. Spanning two decades the company has grouted over 1900 offshore wind foundations at 70% of all wind farms in the world.

On the 1st of November Densit® and Ducorit® became brands of the ITW Polymers Europe group, a division of ITW (Illinois Tool Works). ITW is one the world’s most diversified industrial companies, with a sales turnover in 2012 of USD 18 billion and more than 65,000 employees world-wide. ITW Polymers Europe is working in partnership with the ITW WindGroup.
