Siemens Chooses SMC for Baltic 2 Marine Coordination

Specialist Marine Consultants Ltd (SMC) has begun another contract with Siemens Wind Power to provide marine coordination.

The provision of services for the Baltic 2 offshore wind farm started at the beginning of July 2014 and sees SMC providing marine coordination on five offshore wind farm construction projects at once.

Instructed by Siemens, SMC’s innovative marine coordination management system will be utilised to improve the safety, HSE and carbon footprint of all personnel and transfers on the project. SMC’s service will provide coordination of all sea movements; plan all daily transfers; conduct site inductions and safety briefings; be a focal point in the event of emergencies; and undertake vessel inspections to ensure fitness for purpose and compliance with relevant regulations.

The system’s primary aim is personnel safety and each individual can be located at any time at the click of a button. The system also enables greater flexibility regarding the movement of personnel offshore which enables greater fuel efficiency and overall improved production Siemens.

The UK company’s marine coordination service has been developed since 2011 and has achieved an unrivalled reputation since then within the industry. SMC has provided the service to Siemens on the world’s two largest offshore wind farms, London Array and Gwynt y Mor, as well as on the West of Duddon Sands, Lancelot, Osprey 2 and Hercules 3 offshore wind projects. This has resulted in SMC’s marine coordinators achieving over 120,000 safe transfers of personnel offshore.
