The UK Government has approved another renewable energy project by Dong Energy off its northwest coast.

Namely, Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey last week granted consent to the Danish company to build Burbo Bank Extension offshore wind farm.

Brent Cheshire, DONG Energy’s UK chairman, commented: “Today’s announcement is an important step in clearing the way for the company to make a final investment decision on Burbo Bank Extension.”

With a total capacity of 250MW, the project will comprise up to 69 wind turbines covering an area of 40 square kilometers.

The project, which will provide enough electricity for 170,000 homes, will be located next to the 90MW Burbo Bank wind farm which was completed in 2007.

“This news is a great result at a key point of a project which has been a well-planned and transparent from the beginning,” said Klaus Skoust Møller programme director.

The wind farm is scheduled for inauguration in 2017, with the onshore construction to start this year and offshore in early 2016.
