Dutch-Danish Subsea Interconnector Developers Seek Contractors

Business & Finance

The Dutch and Danish Transmission System Operators (TSOs), TenneT and Energinet.dk, plan to build a power link (interconnector) between Endrup in Denmark and Eemshaven in The Netherlands.

For this purpose, the TSOs have announced a call for tenders for a submarine and underground cable system consisting of design, engineering, procurement, manufacturing, installation, commissioning and maintenance.

The power interconnector, named COBRAcable, will allow the integration of more renewable energy into the European power grid through the Dutch and Danish power systems and will increase security of power supply.

The connection will be constructed as a High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) cable, since the use of DC technology minimizes transmission losses over long distances. The expectation is that the contracts will be awarded in late 2015, followed by the start of construction work in 2016, and completion of the cable in early 2019.
