Lloyd’s Register Endorses WaveRoller

Technology

WaveRoller, the wave energy technology developed by Finnish AW-Energy, has received its first endorsement from Lloyd’s Register Energy.

The independent certification organization Lloyd’s Register Energy issued a Statement of Feasibility to the WaveRoller technology as a first step in the certification process.

The Statement of Feasibility was issued following a rigorous Technology Assessment against the goals for the First of a Kind Device, affirming that Lloyd’s Register Energy recognizes the new technology to be conceptually feasible.

The aim with the Certification of WaveRoller® is to utilise Lloyd’s Register’s considerable experience of marine assets to provide a valuable independent review of all stages of the work with the 350 kW First of a Kind Commercial Device.

This will ensure that risks are identified and mitigated through the entire project life cycle, and that the WaveRoller® technology fulfils industry best practice. In addition to the obvious technical advantages, certification will optimise project financing and insurance cover on a commercial basis.

AW-Energy has ongoing projects in Portugal, Ireland, France, UK, Chile and the US. Installed wave energy capacity will see aggressive growth during the next few years.

Christopher Ridgewell, CTO of AW-Energy said: – “This was perhaps more challenging than we’d appreciated at the beginning of the process. Lloyd’s Register Energy’s engineers certainly demonstrated their experience by challenging our solutions in many ways, but we now feel we’re in a very good condition to proceed with the work. It’s been a valuable learning process for us.”
