Technology

Tokyo-based supplier and operator of offshore floating platforms, MODEC, has recovered its sunken Floating Wind & Current Hybrid Power Generation System (SKWID).

The SKWID sank on 18 December 2014 during the installation process 1.2km off the coast of Kabe Island, Karatsu-City, Saga Prefecture.

As the sunken device used lubricating oils, the main concerns were spill and environmental contamination. However, MODEC confirmed none of the above occurred during the salvage operation on 23 May 2015.

SKWID is a floating wind and current hybrid power generation system capable of harvesting the renewable energy from currents and ocean winds, and converting them into power.
