Block Island: First Steel in Water

Wind Farm Update

The first jacket foundation has been installed three miles (4.8 km) off the Block Island coast yesterday afternoon representing the first steel in the water for Deepwater Wind’s 30 MW project.

According to CEO Jeff Grybowski, the 400 ton lift was conducted by the floating barge crane, Weeks 533, as “smooth as silk.”

Even though the bad weather postponed the installation, Grybowski said that a good deal of weather breaks were built into the construction schedule thus it will not be a problem for Deepwater Wind to catch up.

The installation is expected to take approximately 8 weeks, with cable installation and final erection of the wind turbines scheduled for 2016.

The wind farm, which will comprise five 6 MW wind turbines, is scheduled to be online in 2016.
