The accommodation platform for maintenance crews that are working on the 288MW DanTysk offshore wind farm is currently being built in Emden, Germany, according to Vattenfall, the farm’s majority owner.
Starting this summer, fifty berths distributed over five and a half decks will be in place 90 kilometres off the German North Sea coast to accommodate offshore installers for DanTysk.
The accommodation platform will be 20 metres above sea level and will house up to 50 people in a space of to 2,500 square metres. It will be home to maintenance teams 365 days a year, with these teams working for periods of 2-3 weeks at a time.
The members of the crew will have individual rooms, each equipped with a bath, TV, internet access and a telephone.
Communal areas will include a reading room and a recreation room. The living quarters will also be equipped with a hospital room and a pharmacy.
There will be offices available, fitted with the appropriate communication technology, such as radars, satellite reception and fibre optic links.
The farm’s location required a sophisticated maintenance approach as it would be too costly and time consuming to transfer maintenance staff from the coast on a daily basis. Now, the commuting time will be very short because the first wind turbines are located exactly 1.5 kilometres away, according to Christof Huss, Operations Manager of the wind farm.
The DanTysk wind farm with 80 Siemens 3.6MW wind turbines is a joint venture between Vattenfall (51%) and Stadtwerke München (49%), located some 70 kilometres west of the island of Sylt.
