RenewableUK has welcomed the news that DONG Energy has awarded the UK-based JDR Cables with a multi-milion-pound contract to supply array cables to what will be the world’s biggest offshore wind farm, the 1.2GW Hornsea Project One.

The British company will design and manufacture 242 kilometres of array cables for DONG Energy’s wind farm located 120 km off the Yorkshire coast. JDR will also provide terminations, hang-off arrangements and additional accessories, as well as services at the site. This is JDR’s largest array cable award thus far.

The company will manufacture the cables at its facility in Hartlepool, UK, with batch deliveries scheduled for Q3 2018 and Q2 2019.

The Hornsea Project One contract follows the signing of an array cable framework agreement between DONG and JDR in June 2015, and the subsequent award of the Race Bank offshore wind farm array cable contract in September 2015.

RenewableUK’s Chief Executive, Hugh McNeal, said: “Offshore wind farm developers are committed to maximising UK content in their projects, as this contract demonstrates. The offshore wind industry is bringing well over £20 billion in investment to Britain over the course of this decade, creating thousands of jobs. This is happening not only in Hartlepool, but also across the UK, from Liverpool to Lowestoft and from the Isle of Wight to the Isle of Mull.”

Earlier this month, JDR Cables announced that it is creating 50 new jobs in Newcastle, opening a European service support centre for its offshore energy sector customers.
