In addition to providing the scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of the equipment, the contract will provide services related to asset and site management, logistics, subsea surveys, and control centre services.

RES won the contract following a competitive bidding process ”due to their open and collaborative approach, as well as its deep understanding of engineering, technical and operational matters in the offshore wind industry”, a spokesman for BTW1L said.

Walney 1 wind farm is located in the Irish Sea off the Cumbrian coast, with the offshore substation platform located 15km from the coast of Walney Island and 18km from Barrow-in-Furness.

The wind farm consists of 51 x Siemens 3.6MW wind turbine generators linked to the offshore substation.

The offshore substation is connected to the shore by a 45km undersea cable, which comes ashore near Heysham. The onshore cables, which are about 3km long, connect to the onshore substation at Heysham.

Filippo Di Salle, RES AO&M General Manager, said: “Winning our first long term maintenance contract on an operating offshore wind farm is a great achievement for RES. We’ve been able to use our 10 years expertise in the operation and maintenance of offshore wind farms to great effect in successfully winning this project.”
