The Navantia-Windar team has started the roll-out of the spar-type floating foundations built for the 30MW Hywind Scotland floating wind farm.

The first of five floating foundations for the project was assembled at Navantia’s Fene yard on 17 January.

The delivery of the foundations is expected to be carried out in the second quarter of 2017.

The launching weight of the floating foundations is around 3,200t, including more than 1,000t of high density concrete.

Each foundation has a displacement of approximately 3,500 tonnes, is approximately 90 metres long and has 14.5 metres in diameter.

The foundations will support five Siemens 6MW turbines installed approximately 25 kilometres off the coast of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, in water depths exceeding 100 metres.

The wind farm, owned by Statoil (75%) and Masdar (25%), is expected to be commissioned in late 2017.
