NKT has held a naming ceremony for NKT Victoria, the company’s new cable-laying vessel which was part of the recently completed acquisition of ABB’s high voltage cable business, at its power cable plant in Karlskrona, Sweden.

With the vessel, NKT said the company completed its high-voltage AC/DC power cable system offering to include planning, design, manufacturing, installation and related cable-laying services.

NKT Victoria, delivered to NKT in early April, is a DP3 vessel equipped with a remotely operated vehicle featuring cameras and sonar to enable high-precision laying of high-voltage offshore cables.

If not incorporated in the power cable itself, fiber optic cables for monitoring purposes can be placed simultaneously, NKT said.

In addition, the vessel uses a power-from-shore solution together with onboard energy storage systems. The power-from-shore connection can be maintained while loading the cable onto the vessel, NKT said.

“With this cable-laying vessel we are now among the very few AC/DC high-voltage offshore cable system providers to deliver complete turnkey solutions,” Michael Hedegaard Lyng, President and CEO of NKT, said.

”We are well-positioned to continue taking an active part in the growing global market for offshore wind projects and further build on our reputation as a trusted partner in this industry.”

Following the naming ceremony, NKT Victoria will head out for its first cable-laying project north of Scotland.
