Steelwind rolled the first can at its facility in Nordenham on 11 July. High strength steel plate material is supplied by Steelwind’s parent company Dillinger Hütte, the company said.

In total, Steelwind will manufacture and deliver 40 complete monopiles from Nordenham, as well as manufacture and supply 120 monopile segments to Formosa Heavy Industries (FHI) Corporation which will fabricate additional 40 monopiles from those sections in Mailao, Taiwan.

Production for Yunlin is scheduled to continue until mid-2020, Steelwind said. The monopiles and the monopile sections will be transported from Germany to Taiwan by Jumbo Maritime.

The Yunlin offshore wind farm will feature 80 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines of the 8MW class installed some eight kilometres offshore and scheduled to come online in 2021.

The project is 73% owned by wpd and 27% owned by a Sojitz Corp-led consortium which alsoincludes Chugoku Electric Power, Chudenko Corporation, Shikoku Electric Power, and JXTG Nippon Oil & Energy Corporation.
