German Heavyweights Sign Offshore Wind Power Purchase Agreements

Contracts & Tenders

RWE has signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with eleven German industrial clients and one large municipal utility to supply them with green electricity generated by its Nordsee Ost and Amrumbank West offshore wind farms.

The relevant agreements were signed between RWE Supply & Trading and Badische Stahlwerke, Freudenberg Group, Infraserv Höchst, Mainova, Messer, Schott, Telefónica, Verallia, Vodafone, Wacker as well as ZF.

Under the agreements, the supply of green electricity to the new clients will start in 2025 and 2026, respectively.

The majority of the contracts will run for a term of ten years.

Depending on customer requirements, they provide for direct purchase (as produced), scheduled delivery with wind farm profile (as nominated), or delivery structured as a continuous electricity load (baseload electricity).

Electricity produced at the two offshore wind farms was already sold on PPAs to Deutsche Bahn in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

With these most recent PPAs, all of the electricity generated by Nordsee Ost and Amrumbank West from 2026 has been sold under contract.

“With these long-term contracts we are ensuring planning security for both parties and helping Germany to remain competitive as a location for production. We are preparing to market further electricity from offshore wind farms that are currently under development to supply industrial customers with high-quality green electricity”, said Ulf Kerstin, CCO of RWE Supply & Trading.

Amrumbank West features 80 Siemens SWT-3.6-120 turbines with an output of 302 MW. The project, located 35 kilometres north of Helgoland, has been operational since 2015.

The 295 MW Nordsee Ost is in the immediate vicinity of Amrumbank West. It consists of 48 Senvion 6 MW wind turbines commissioned in May 2015.
