‘World’s Most Powerful Wind Turbine’ Chosen for German Offshore Wind Farm

Business & Finance

German clean energy asset manager, Luxcara, has signed a preferred supplier deal with China’s Mingyang Smart Energy for the supply of wind turbines to the Waterkant offshore wind project in the German North Sea.

The reservation agreement covers the supply of 16 of the “world’s most powerful offshore wind turbines” with up to 18.5 MW capacity each, for installation in 2028.

The wind turbines have a rotor diameter of 260 metres, which maximises the production from the site, Luxcara said.

The units will be manufactured using 100 per cent renewable energy, the company added.

According to Luxcara, the Mingyang wind turbines were selected after an international tender, launched in late 2023, and a due diligence exercise, covering the supply chain, ESG compliance with the EU taxonomy, and cyber security supported by DNV and KPMG.

“By deciding for the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine, we will be able to expedite Germany’s energy transition while fostering much-needed competition in the industry. In any case, management, operation and control of the Waterkant wind farm will remain entirely in the hands of an independent German company,” said Holger Matthiesen, Project Director at Luxcara and Managing Director of the project company Waterkant Energy.

In August 2023, Luxcara announced its successful participation in the German offshore wind auction. The project company Waterkant Energy won the right to build an offshore wind farm on the N-6.7 site.

The area is located in the German Exclusive Economic Zone next to a cluster of existing offshore wind farms approximately 90 kilometres from Borkum Island.

The Waterkant offshore wind project is planned to generate clean electricity for approximately 400,000 households and contribute to Germany’s goal to reach a renewable energy share of 80 per cent in the country’s power mix by 2030.
