Poles Getting Ready to Build EUR 253 Million Offshore Wind Terminal at Port of Gdańsk

Ports & Logistics

The Port of Gdańsk Authority has selected a company in charge of building and operating the offshore wind terminal that the Port and the Polish government announced in 2022. The company, called Istrana, is expected to soon complete its own tenders for engineering consultancy and terminal construction services, with the work on the new terminal anticipated to start this summer.

The Polish government has just received approval from the European Commission, under EU State aid rules, for approximately EUR 194 million to support the construction of the offshore wind terminal. The beneficiary of the measure is Istrana which will receive a direct grant that will be funded through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF).

According to the Commission, the total investment cost of the project is EUR 253 million, with the remaining part to be financed by the beneficiary’s funds.

The Port Authority announced on 25 June 2024 that it selected the offer of Istrana as a result of the procedure launched in 2022, which sought a lessee of an area within the administrative boundaries of the Port who would also build and operate the terminal.

The terminal is expected to be operational in 2026 and will be operated under the lease between Istrana and the Port Authority until 2055.

Istrana, owned by Baltic Hub Container Terminal, has two active tenders, according to the company’s website. One is for engineering consultancy services and the other is for the design and construction of the terminal, referred to as Baltic Hub T5 Offshore Wind Terminal Project in Istrana’s documentation.

The project involves building the T5 terminal by land reclamation of 21 hectares and the construction of deep-water berths, enabling the new terminal to be used as a storage, assembly and offloading port facility for offshore wind components including wind turbine blades, nacelles, and wind turbine towers.
