Ramboll Shifts to FEED Design for 2 GW West of Orkney Windfarm

Business & Finance

Ramboll has secured a contract for the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) services for the 2 GW West of Orkney Windfarm project offshore Scotland.

Building upon Ramboll’s previous Pre-FEED work for the project, the company has been selected to continue with the FEED design services. The phase will include developing designs for both monopile and jacket foundation options.

Ramboll will provide all needed technical information, such as the total steel quantities, identification, and mitigation of risks to be as low as reasonably possible, the company said, and technical design requirements to help the developer select the preferred foundation type.

In addition, the company will support Offshore Wind Power Limited (OWPL), a consortium of Corio Generation, TotalEnergies, and Renewable Infrastructure Development Group (RIDG), with identifying potential supply chain options for the manufacturing of the fixed-bottom foundations and preparing CAPEX estimations for fabrication.

Located 30 kilometres off Orkney’s western shoreline and 25 kilometres away from the northern coast of Sutherland, the West of Orkney Windfarm is projected to have a capacity of around 2 GW.

The project is being developed by OWLP which secured the development rights from Crown Estate Scotland in the ScotWind leasing round in 2022.

Last year, the project became the first ScotWind proposal to submit both its offshore consent application to Scottish Ministers and its onshore planning application to The Highland Council.

The wind farm is planned to begin generating renewable energy by 2030, providing enough electricity to power over two million households, according to Ramboll.
