South Korean Firm to Supply Power Equipment for Ørsted’s Hornsea 4 Offshore Wind Farm

Business & Finance

Denmark’s Ørsted has awarded a contract to Hyosung Heavy Industries for the supply of ultra-high voltage power equipment for the Hornsea 4 offshore wind farm in the UK.

Under the contract, the South Korean company will supply 400 kV ultra-high voltage transformers and reactors, essential components for improving power quality for the 2.4 GW Hornsea 4 offshore wind project.

The most recent contract further strengthens the company’s presence in Europe, where it has accumulated over 1 trillion won (about EUR 667 million) in orders this year, as reported by the company.

In August 2015, Ørsted acquired the rights to develop the Hornsea zone from SMart Wind, who were originally awarded the zone in the Crown Estate Round 3 bidding auction.

To date, the 1.2 GW Hornsea 1 and the 1.3 GW Hornsea 2 are in operation, and the 2.9 GW Hornsea 3 is currently in construction.

The Hornsea 4 offshore wind farm was granted consent by the Secretary of State for the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero in July of last year.

The project recently received its contract for difference (CfD) award from the UK Government in September 2024.

Ørsted expects to take the final investment decision on Hornsea 4 within the next 18 months and is currently targeting the commissioning of the project before the end of 2030.
