EIB Backs 1,440 MW Polish Offshore Wind Projects

On 6 November, the European Investment Bank (EIB) approved the financing for the Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind projects in Poland, being developed by Polenergia and Norway’s Equinor.

According to a recent social media post by EIB vice president Teresa Czerwińska, the funds will be used to reduce emissions and air pollution, expand renewable energy sources, and support the broadly understood energy transformation in Poland, though the exact amount of funding was not specified.

In addition, the EIB’s involvement in the project will help strengthen the country’s energy security and introduce the latest technologies, said Czerwińska.

The Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 offshore wind farms received all necessary construction permits in August. Recently, the project companies, MFW Bałtyk II Sp. z o.o. and MFW Bałtyk III Sp. z o.o., signed a total of four agreements for the charter of crew transfer vessels (CTVs) for the construction of the wind farms.

Preparatory work on land is planned to start this year, and the first electricity from the wind farms is anticipated in 2027.

Bałtyk 2 and Bałtyk 3 have a combined capacity of 1,440 MW, and the commercial operations for both projects are scheduled to begin in 2028.
