The project involves the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (EPCI) of 250 kilometres of 525 kV high-voltage direct current, cross-linked polyethylene (HVDC XLPE) onshore and offshore export cable systems that will transmit 2 GW of offshore wind energy from the German North Sea to the mainland.

The commissioning of LanWin2, part of TenneT’s 2 GW offshore grid connection development programme in the German North Sea, is expected in 2030.

In May 2023, TenneT awarded EUR 5.5 billion worth of framework agreements to NKT, Nexans, and a consortium of Jan De Nul, LS Cable, and Denys for 525 kV HVDC cable systems for ten offshore wind projects in the Netherlands and Germany.

Under the agreements, Nexans secured work on LanWin2 in Lower Saxony, to be connected to the German grid on land in the Heide area in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as the BalWin3 and LanWin4, which will connect to the national grid in Wilhelmshaven.

Nexans signed a call-off contract for the BalWin3 and LanWin3 projects with TenneT in March 2024.

Offshore converter platforms for all three projects will be built by the Siemens Energy-Dragados Offshore consortium.
