RWE has given the consortium of Aker Solutions and Siemens Energy the full notice to proceed on the offshore and onshore substations for the Norfolk Vanguard West and East offshore wind projects in the UK.
Aker Solutions has provided work for the projects under a limited notice to proceed announced in November 2023, the company said on 15 January.

Aker Solutions is executing the Norfolk offshore platform projects through a consortium with Siemens Energy with Aker Solutions’ scope being engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of the HVDC offshore platform, while Siemens Energy is responsible for the onshore station as well as the high voltage equipment in the offshore substations.
The joint venture between Aker Solutions and Drydocks World will deliver the two HVDC platforms. Fabrication of the platform topsides will be performed by Drydocks World in Dubai, UAE, while the fabrication of the foundations will be executed by Aker Solutions’ yard in Verdal, Norway.
Engineering and procurement activities are already underway for both platform topsides and foundations. Fabrication of the Norfolk Vanguard West platform started at Drydocks World in April 2024, while fabrication of the Norfolk Vanguard East platform is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025.
The offshore platforms will be delivered and installed in 2027 and 2028. Before offshore installation, they will be towed to Aker Solutions’ Stord yard for final preparations, including transfer from the transportation vessel to the heavy lift vessel, Aker says.
The Norfolk Vanguard West and East represent the first phase of RWE’s Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone, which also includes the Norfolk Boreas project.
The three projects, each with a planned capacity of 1.4 GW, are located 50 to 80 kilometres off the coast of Norfolk in East Anglia and have already secured seabed rights, grid connections, Development Consent Orders and all other key permits.
