Under a contract signed in 2023, GPB manufactured the two offshore substation topsides that will be installed at the Baltic Power site some 23 kilometres off the Polish coast near Plaża Wydmy Lubiatowskie.

Each topside weighs about 1,300 tonnes and has dimensions of 20x40x40 metres, the size of a multi-story building. The units were built in facilities in Gdańsk and Gdynia.

The substation topsides are scheduled to set sail for Denmark next week, where they will be outfitted at the CS Wind Offshore facility in Aalborg.

“Poland’s first offshore wind farms are starting to take shape. This is a big moment for Poland’s energy transition to renewables: the kick-off of Polish offshore wind. Offshore wind will create tens of thousands of good jobs. It will revitalise coastal regions and communities – here in Pomerania and elsewhere,” said Malgosia Bartosik, WindEurope Deputy CEO.

“Offshore wind will make Europe stronger and more autonomous. It will make countries like Poland less dependent on energy imports from Russia and elsewhere. It will ensure reliable and cheap electricity for households and businesses. It’s key to Europe’s industrial competitiveness.”

Recently, preparations for offshore construction kicked off at the site in Poland’s Baltic Sea, with several vessels involved, including Van Oord’s heavy-lift ship Svanen.

Baltic Power will feature 78 monopiles in total – 76 for Vestas’ 15 MW wind turbines and two for offshore substations. The monopiles will be delivered by Steelwind Nordenham under a contract signed with Baltic Power, a joint venture between Orlen Group and Northland Power.

Set to begin operations in late 2026, the offshore wind farm is projected to provide renewable energy to more than 1.5 million households in Poland.
