Australian Developer Plans 2.5 GW Offshore Wind Farm Near Garden Island

Project Updates

Australian company Wind With Purpose (WWP) is proposing to build a 2.5 GW offshore wind project, called Catalpa Offshore Wind Farm, southwest of Garden Island, Western Australia (WA).

The developer, which recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an Australian joint venture for low-carbon cement for its onshore wind projects, plans to deliver the offshore wind project, named Catalpa Offshore Wind Farm, as the third stage of its Kwinana Wind Zone development, the first two stages being a 50 MW and a 200 MW onshore wind farm.

Together with another onshore wind development the company has in planning, called Southern Scarp Wind, WWP has a 5 GW wind energy portfolio in Western Australia. According to information on the company’s website, by 2030, WWP is targeting 1.5 GW of its wind farms to be operational with the remaining 3.5 GW to be in the final stages of development or under construction.

Last year, Wind With Purpose posted an update on social media welcoming the Australian government’s declaration of the offshore wind area in the Indian Ocean off Bunbury, saying it marked a significant milestone in WA’s energy transition.

“Offshore wind energy will play a vital role, alongside other energy technologies where this State has a clear strategic and natural advantage and will support the growing demand for clean energy and the need to remove heavy industry’s carbon emissions”, Wind With Purpose said in September 2024, following the declaration of the WA offshore wind development area.
