Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure have inaugurated the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea.
Located approximately 72 kilometres off the German coast, Borkum Riffgrund 3 comprises 83 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW turbines and can generate enough electricity annually to cover the consumption of close to one million German households.
The project is Ørsted’s sixth operational offshore wind farm in Germany and brings the company’s installed offshore wind capacity in the country to around 2.5 GW.
Installation of all 83 turbines was completed in January 2025, with Cadeler and Seaway7 carrying out the turbine installation work.
The wind farm fed its first power into the German grid on 3 December 2025. Its full commissioning was delayed by the construction of TenneT’s DolWin5 offshore grid connection, which was fully energised in October 2025.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 does not have its own offshore substation; its turbines are connected via 66 kV cables directly to TenneT’s DolWin epsilon converter platform.
Ørsted has signed long-term corporate power purchase agreements (CPPAs) covering 786 MW of Borkum Riffgrund 3’s capacity with Amazon, BASF, Covestro, Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft/REWE Group and Google.
