Wpd, Vattenfall and BlueFloat Name Their Floating Wind Project in France

The consortium formed by wpd, Vattenfall, and BlueFloat Energy has revealed the name of the project it will bid with in the upcoming floating offshore wind tender for a site off the coast of Southern Brittany in France, for which the consortium prequalified last month.

The proposed floating wind farm is called Triskéol, with an association to the Triskel, a characteristic symbol of Celtic art, and Aeolus, the keeper of the winds. In addition to a strong link with the Breton culture, the name refers to the wind and a wind turbine, which transforms the wind into renewable electricity, the partners said.

“With the name Triskéol, the consortium of wpd, Vattenfall and BlueFloat Energy blends into the culture of the Brittany region and demonstrates its desire to anchor itself in the territory”, the companies said in a press release.

In September, the French government selected several developers and consortia to participate in the country’s first tender dedicated to floating wind, after launching the tendering procedure in April, looking for a developer of its first, 270 MW commercial floating project in South Brittany, off the Belle and Groix islands.

After being prequalified, the bidders have entered a competitive dialogue before the government invites bids for building and operating a project.

The floating wind tender is part of a wider plan by the French government which, under the the Multiannual Energy Programme (Programmation pluriannuelle de l’énergie), is in the process of putting 8.75 GW of offshore wind capacity out to tender by 2028.
