Floating Wind Projects Mushroom Offshore Sardinia

The port authorities in Cagliari have received applications for maritime state concessions for four different floating wind projects to be built offshore Sardinia.

30-year concessions are sought from the Port Authority of Cagliari for all of the four projects to be constructed offshore and allowed corridors for export cables to make landfalls.

AvenHexicon, a 50/50 joint venture between Hexicon and Avapa Energy, has applied for maritime concessions for two projects – Sardinia South 1 and Sardinia South 2.

Located offshore Capo Teulada and the Isola del Toro, Sardinia South 1 will feature 64 floating wind turbines and a floating electrical substation.

Sardinia South 2 is located in the stretch of sea offshore Capo Teulada and Capo Spartivento, and will comprise 30 floating wind turbines and a floating electrical substation.

The export cables for both of the projects would make landfalls at the Municipality of Selargius.

AvenHexicon already holds priority rights to develop a floating offshore wind farm with a capacity of up to 1.35 GW northwest of Sardinia.

The Milan-based Regolo Rinnovabili, a subsidiary of BayWa r.e., is seeking a maritime state concession to build a floating wind farm off the south-western coast of Sardinia.

Located off Portoscuso, the San Pietro South wind farm comprises 34 floating wind turbines and a floating substation. The export cables would make landfall at the Municipality of Portoscuso.

This would be the second floating wind project that Regolo Rinnovabili plans to build offshore Sardinia.

Back in January, the developer applied for a concession to build and operate a 510 MW floating wind farm off the northwest of Sardinia.

The fourth and final project has been proposed by the Milan-based Ninfea Rinnovabili.

The developer plans to build and operate a floating wind farm in the proximity of Regolo Rinovabili’s proposed San Pietro South project.

Ninfea Rinovabili’s project, San Pietro North, also comprises 34 wind turbines and the accompanying grid infrastructure and is located off the Municipality of Portoscuso, where the project’s export cables would make landfall.

This is Ninfea Rinovabili’s second floating wind project to reach this stage of development. Earlier this month, the developer has applied for a maritime concession to build and operate a 750 MW floating wind project in the Malta Channel, off the southeast of Sicily.

These are not the only floating wind projects proposed to be built offshore Sardinia.

Back in 2020, offshore WIND reported on the Milano-based Ichnusa Wind Power applying for a maritime state concession with the Port Authority of Cagliari to build a 42-turbine project, Sardegna Sud Occidentale, off the west coast of Sardinia.

GreenIT, a joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and CDP Equity for the production of energy from renewable sources, and CI IV, a fund managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), is also planning to develop a 500 MW floating wind farm off the south-western coast of Sardinia.

Falck Renewables and BlueFloat Energy are also among the developers who have submitted maritime state concession applications to build and operate floating wind farms offshore Sardinia. The partners have proposed to build the 975 MW Tibula Energia wind farm off the northeastern coast of Sardinia.

And Nora Ventu, a company set up by Falck Renewables and BlueFloat Energy, is behind two floating wind projects to be developed in the Gulf of Cagliari – Nora Energia 1 and Nora Energia 2.

The Nora Energia 1 wind farm will comprise 53 wind turbines with a combined capacity of 795 MW. The wind farm is located in the sea area of the Sardinian Channel southwest of the Gulf of Cagliari, positioned at distances between 22 and 34 kilometres from the coast.

The 600 MW Nora Energia 2 will consist of 40 wind turbines in the stretch of the sea inside the Sardinian Channel and south-east of the Gulf of Cagliari, located about 30 kilometres south of Capo Carbonara.

Spain’s Acciona has also shown interest in waters off Sardinia with its plan to build a 480 MW wind farm off the central-western coast of this Mediterranean island.

By far the largest project to be built offshore Sardinia was proposed by the Milan-based Zefiro Vento. This developer wants to build a 210-turbine, 3,150 MW floating wind farm in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off Olbia on the northeastern coast of Sardinia.

Nurax Wind Power, a Milan-based developer, is seeking to build a 462 MW project. This wind farm is also located offshore Olbia.
