Vestas Turbines Chosen for Undisclosed Large-Scale Offshore Wind Project in Northern Europe

Vestas has signed a conditional agreement for the supply of wind turbines for a large-scale offshore wind project in Europe. The company did not disclose the name of the client or the project.

In an update on 17 May, the Danish wind turbine manufacturer said that the offshore wind project was located in Northern Europe and that it had two construction phases with a combined capacity of more than 1 GW.

“If and when the agreement translates into firm and unconditional orders, Vestas will disclose these in accordance with the company’s disclosure policy,” Vestas said.

The company did not specify which model would be the subject of the potential orders but, given that this is an upcoming and gigawatt-scale offshore wind project, it is perhaps safe to assume that Vestas’s V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine would be used.

Vestas already received orders for the V236-15.0 MW for offshore projects in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and Denmark, and will start installing the first 15 MW turbines offshore in 2025.

The Danish wind turbine maker installed the 15 MW prototype at the Østerild National Test Centre for large wind turbines in Western Jutland, Denmark in December 2022. At the beginning of 2023, the wind turbine reached its nominal power rating of 15 MW.

In August last year, the prototype set a world record for the most power output by a single wind turbine in 24 hours, producing 363 megawatt-hours in that period. Vestas received a type certificate for its 15 MW wind turbine at the end of 2023.
