Deep Wind Offshore Unveils Plans for Gigawatt-Scale Floating Offshore Wind Farm in Sweden

Norway-headquartered Deep Wind Offshore has applied to develop and operate a 1.5 GW floating offshore wind farm in Sweden.

The Swedish government has received the first application for a floating offshore wind farm outside Stockholm.

The Erik Segersäll floating offshore wind farm is planned around 74 kilometres east of Nynäshamn and can reach electricity consumers on the mainland and Gotland.

The area is defined as an energy area, suitable for wind power, in the Swedish Maritime and Water Authority’s plans.

The wind farm has an area that enables a potential total installed output of 4.5 GW through several phases of development, which will give a total annual production of up to 19.5 TWh and correspond to the consumption of the Stockholm region’s 2.5 million inhabitants, according to Deep Wind Offshore.

In the first phase, the floating project will produce approximately 6.5 TWh, corresponding to the city of Stockholm’s total annual electricity consumption, said the developer.

This is Deep Wind Offshore’s second application for offshore wind in Sweden. The first application, for the Olof Skötkonung bottom-fixed offshore wind farm in the Bothnian Sea, has been forwarded to the government to the county board in Uppsala.

“After three years in the Swedish market, we are very pleased to have submitted applications for one fixed and one floating project. We have already reached an important milestone in the first project, which confirms our strong pipeline,” said Knut Vassbotn, CEO of Deep Wind Offshore.

Founded in 2021, Deep Wind Offshore is owned by Knutsen Group, Haugaland Kraft, Sunnhordland Kraftlag, and Octopus Energy. The company operates projects in South Korea together with BP and in Norway with EDF Renewables.

Deep Wind Offshore has a portfolio of more than 10 GW, including 2 GW under exclusive development.
