Entrion Wind, Simply Blue to Jointly Evaluate 100-Metre Depth Foundation Tech Feasibility

Business development

Entrion Wind has joined forces with the offshore wind developer, Simply Blue Group, to explore the feasibility of the Fully Restrained Platform (FRP) monopile foundation technology.

Entrion Wind is developing the FRP which combines fixed and floating platform technologies extending the water depths of the monopile up to 100 metres.

The joint study will examine the technical and economic viability of FRP technology in 60-to-80-metre waters and compare it with other foundation alternatives.

In addition, it will optimise the FRP configuration based on integrated engineering, fabrication, installation, as well as operations and maintenance assessment.

The FRP monopile concept combines fixed and floating platform technologies extending the water depths of the monopile up to 100 metres.

The foundation’s main components include a monopile with an air-can (AC) in one piece, a transition piece with a load ring, and a mooring system which can either be taut moorings with pile anchors or taut moorings with suction piles.

In 2021, the Norwegian company and Acteon (through InterMoor) signed an agreement to jointly conduct a feasibility study of the FRP monopile design offshore Massachusetts in water depths of between 35 and 85 metres.

Two years later, the Dutch company Sif decided to partake in the demonstration project for the FRP monopiles.

When it comes to Simply Blue Group, the Ireland-headquartered company has a global pipeline of 10 GW of floating offshore wind projects and 4 GW of fixed-bottom wind.
