Hitachi Energy to Integrate 960 MW East Anglia Two Wind Farm into UK Grid

Business & Finance

Hitachi Energy has been awarded an order from ScottishPower Renewables to provide onshore and offshore grid connection and power quality solutions for the East Anglia Two offshore wind farm in the UK.

The project will integrate 960 MW of renewable electricity from the East Anglia Two wind farm, located 32 kilometres off the Suffolk coast of England, providing green power for nearly one million homes, said Hitachi Energy.

“Connecting the clean, green generation from our turbines to the grid is a vital part of any renewables project and it’s great to be in such capable hands with Hitachi Energy for East Anglia TWO. This £4 billion windfarm will have the capacity to power almost one million homes with green electricity and will help drive the country forward on its clean energy mission,” said Ross Ovens, ScottishPower Renewables’ Managing Director for Offshore.

Under the agreement, the company will provide Grid-eXpand Offshore solutions and onshore grid connection equipment using an EconiQ gas-insulated switchgear.

The Grid-eNsure power quality solution, SVC Light STATCOM, will play a key role in using power electronics and advanced control systems to ensure reliable, flexible, and stable power despite the intermittent nature of wind power, added Hitachi Energy.

“We are proud to work with ScottishPower Renewables to accelerate the clean energy transition. Integrating bulk renewables such as wind power is critical to accelerating the energy transition and is also an effective and long-term solution to decarbonize power,” said Niklas Persson, Managing Director of Hitachi Energy’s Business Unit Grid Integration.

The East Anglia Two offshore wind farm was selected in the UK Government’s latest Contract for Difference (CfD) Allocation Round 6 (AR6).

The project will feature 61 Siemens Gamesa SG 14-236 DD wind turbines, which will be placed on top of the monopiles supplied by Sif. The installation of the wind turbines and foundations will be carried out by Cadeler.
