New Floating Wind Platform Moves Towards Testing and Demo Stage

ABS has approved the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) documents for a deepwater floating offshore wind platform design developed by ECO TLP and Mocean Offshore. According to ABS, with FEED documents approved, the platform design now moves into commercialisation for site-specific projects.

“ABS approval for non-site-specific FEED for a wide range of water depths and wind turbines sizes allows ECO TLP to significantly reduce the certification process for commercial projects. Achieving this is an important milestone for our solution, allowing us to operate in the water safely and qualify for financial and insurance terms”, said Nicole Johnson Murphy, CEO of ECO TLP Inc.

ECO TLP and Mocean Offshore received approval in principle (AiP) from ABS for the floating wind turbine foundation in 2023, after which the design moved into the FEED phase at ABS.

The ECO TLP floating wind foundation design utilises slip-formed cylindrical concrete hulls and a variety of anchor types. The platform, combined with a hybrid spar tension-leg mooring system, has a smaller footprint than traditional floaters using catenary mooring and can support the largest wind turbines out there, according to the technology developers and ABS.

According to ECO TLP, the design incorporates a patented process for construction, installation and deployment of 15+ MW wind turbines, reducing the cost of installation and operations and maintenance (O&M).

Mocean Offshore and Arup International Projects are providing marine, civil and structural engineering support on the ECO TLP platform development.

“Achieving ABS approval is a recognition to the effort and dedication of Mocean’s engineering team over the past few years. We take great pride in working with the ECO TLP team as its lead engineering partner and look forward to contributing our expertise as we advance this design from concept to construction”, said Jort Braun, General Manager at Mocean Offshore.
