Offshore substations are essential for getting offshore wind power back to shore. Without them, wind turbines would sit idle. Once the installed capacity exceeds about 100MW, power from the turbines needs to be stepped up in voltage to get it back to shore. Offshore substations are used to reduce electrical losses by increasing the voltage before export of power to shore. A standard design for offshore wind substations which reduces maintenance to a minimum is yet to be developed.
