On 20 December 2010, Trianel Windkraftwerk Borkum GmbH & Co KG (“TWB”) activated an order with Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke GmbH (“NSW”) to deliver and install 65 km of medium-voltage submarine cables for the first construction phase of the Trianel Borkum West II offshore wind farm. The order is worth an amount in excess of € 22 m (some $ 28 m). The installation work is scheduled for the second half of 2012.
The Trianel Borkum West II wind farm, 56 square kilometers in size, is located about 45 km to the north of Borkum’s coast. In the first phase of construction, 40 wind energy systems each rated at 5 MW will be built, for a total output of 200 MW, enough to supply 200,000 households. Another 40 systems will be added in a second phase of construction.
Responsibility for the order is vested in the Submarine Cable Division located in Nordenham, through the wholly owned subsidiary Norddeutsche Seekabelwerke GmbH (NSW). The General Cable Corporation took over NSW in 2007, and expanded its submarine cable capabilities to include production of submarine cables in the medium and high-voltage ranges. Today, in its submarine cable operations, the company offers comprehensive solutions for sea-based cable systems in the telecommunication, oil and gas sectors, and for power utilities in the low, medium and high-voltage ranges, as well as the relevant accessories, plus project development, management and laying services.
The package offered by General Cable covers the production, delivery and laying of submarine cables measuring 65 km. The installation work, in water approximately 40 meters deep, will be carried out using NOSTAG 10, which is owned by a consortium of NSW, Hans Schramm & Sohn GmbH & Co. KG and Tiefbau-GmbH “Unterweser” (TAGU). NOSTAG 10 is a pontoon specially designed for cable-laying, which the company has already used successfully in comparable projects, such as Roedsand 2.
