SHETL Awards Survey Contract for HVDC Cable (UK)

In 1997, a geophysical and geotechnical survey was undertaken from Port Gordon on mainland Scotland to Shetland for two new subsea DC cables routes.

This will be linked by an HVDC cable to a converter station to the north west of Noss Head, near Wick. The power will then be exported via this link to the hub and from there to Port Gordon. The route to Noss Head was surveyed in 2010.

A re-survey of the route from Port Gordon to the hub is now necessary as the Round 3 wind farm license at Beatrice is over the original Shetland route thus SHETL requires a more direct route out to the hub from Port Gordon than the one surveyed in 1977.

There is also some additional survey work to be completed on the Noss Head route that was not completed during the 2010 survey.
