Allswater Designing Platform for Black Rock Tidal Power’s Project

Technology

Allswater has started working on the detailed design of the semi-submersible Triton Tidal Platform for Black Rock Tidal Power (BRTP), the company said Friday.

The Triton Platform will host an array of Schottel Hydro turbines generating up to 2.5 MW of power. The first platform is planned for installation at the FORCE site at the Bay of Fundy and is scheduled to be operational in 2017.

The platform has two spar buoys that provide buoyancy and house both electrical and mechanical equipment for the installation. The platform is attached to a gravity base with a universal joint, allowing the array to align to the direction of the flow.

It will be maintenance-friendly by allowing the spar buoys to shift from the vertical operating position to the horizontal maintenance position with the use of water ballast.
