Aker, Aibel Win FEED Deals for 560 MW Scottish Floater

Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, a joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and HitecVision, have awarded the front-end engineering and design (FEED) contracts for the 560 MW Green Volt floating offshore wind project in Scotland to two partnerships.

Aker Solutions, in collaboration with ABB, and Aibel, working with Hitachi Energy, will handle the FEED Phase 1 scope of work, which includes the engineering, procurement, and construction of an offshore substation, covering both the jacket and topsides.

The team will also design high-voltage equipment to deliver power to oil and gas assets and to an onshore substation.

ABB will lead the electrical infrastructure development, including integrated automation and telecommunications systems for the offshore platform and onshore substation. The company will also manage the integration of renewable energy into the grid.

A portion of the work will be conducted from the contractors’ UK offices, including those in Aberdeen and London.

The successful designs will proceed to the next stage of the FEED process, said the developers.

“The topside and jacket FEED design will be led from London with support from ABB for the HV voltage system, telecommunication, substation automation and hardware delivery. For the installation, commissioning and operational phases the project will be supported by AKSO and ABB in Scotland,” said Nicola Grieve, Director of Aker Solutions.

The Green Volt floating offshore wind farm won a UK Government Contract for Difference (CfD) in September 2024.

The project, which is one of the first large-scale commercial floating wind developments in Europe, secured onshore and offshore approvals at the beginning of this year.

Located 80 miles off the Scottish coast, Green Volt will feature up to 35 floating wind turbines, providing up to 560 MW of renewable energy capacity.

The project is set to begin generating power in 2029 and is expected to cut carbon emissions by one million tonnes annually upon completion.
