Nexans to Install Inter-Array Cables for Gode Wind Farms

DONG Energy is set to increase its offshore wind power capacity in Germany after signing a contract with Nexans for the delivery and installation of 140 km of 34 kV inter-array cables.

The inter-array cables will link individual turbines at the Gode Wind 1 and 2 wind farms and connect them to an offshore transformer platform, off the Lower Saxony coast in north-east Germany.

The new agreement is part of a larger outline contract between DONG energy and Nexans for the supply of a total 900 km of medium-voltage cable for internal farm cabling.

Wind energy is a vital element in Germany’s ongoing Energy Turnaround (Energiewende). The wind farms, which lie around 45 km off the coast – just off the islands of Norderney and Juist, will have a capacity of 582 MW – enough to power around 600,000 German homes. Total investment for the two projects stands at around €2.2 billion with construction commencing in Spring 2015.

At the occasion of the signing, Dirk Steinbrink Executive Vice President of High Voltage & Underwater Cables commented: “We are delighted that DONG Energy values the quality and our more than 40 years of experience with offshore cables and that we, as supplier for these offshore projects, can do out bit to promote the energy turnaround.”

Trine Borum Bojsen, Managing Director of the German wind sector at DONG Energy, said: “The order for Nexans shows that the German supplier industry already occupies a key position in the international offshore business, as the outline contract with Nexans not only includes the supply of our German projects Borkum Riffgrund 1 and Gode Wind, but also the supply of our UK wind farms.”

Stephan Weil, Lower Saxony State Premier, who witnessed the signing of the contract, said: “Offshore wind energy is an essential pillar of the energy turnaround and, thanks to the high number of wind hours, makes a key contribution to the climate-friendly supply security of the future. The Gode Wind 1 and 2 wind farms are significant milestones on the path towards this goal.”
